ACA Canoe Instructor Certification Course Offering


Dates: May 9-13, 2015 (Sat-Wed)

Certification for Tandem or Solo Canoe Instructors/Current Instructor Updates

Level 1 (2 Days, May 9-10): Intro to Canoe

Level 2 (1 day May 11 + Level 1 Cert): Essentials of River Canoe

Level 3 (1 day May 12 + Level 2 Cert): River Canoeing

Level 4 (1 day May 13 + Level 3 Cert): White Water Canoeing


This course is appropriate for:

* Camps and Conferences offering canoe programs on Lakes or Rivers

* County and City Parks and Recreation Canoe Program Staff/Trip Leaders

* Physical Education Programs wishing to teach paddling as a life-time sport

* Current Certified Instructors needing updates

* Anyone wishing to teach canoeing and gain in their own skills as well, and

* Girl and Boy Scout Leaders wishing to teach skills and lead trips for Scouting Programs.


Stay for all 5 days OR just for the level certification you wish to achieve.  All Course work will be in the Roanoke Valley Area.  Tent Camping ($5/night), Bunk style cabin accommodations ($10/night), or local hotels can be arranged for participants if desired (lodging fees are NOT included in Course Price).  For tent camping or cabin space, check YES on your Registration Form.


Classes begin daily at 9:00 am and finish around 5:00 pm.  Instructor Candidates are expected to bring a “working” lunch to each session, and plenty of fluids for the day.

Level 1 (Days 1 & 2): Intro to Canoeing

Level 2 (Day 3): Essentials of River Canoeing

Level 3 (Day 4): River Canoeing

Level 4 (Day 5): White Water Canoeing


Course Price:  $100/person/day + $25 reg/materials fee

Location:  Roanoke Area, based from Camp Bethel (328 Bethel Road, Fincastle, VA 24090)

Prerequisite: Must be a current or new member of the American Canoe Association and pay $25 fee to the Safety Instruction and Education Council (SEIC) at time of certification.  Note: SEIC fee is included in the course fee for all candidates staying three or more days.


Equipment:  Instructor Candidates may bring their own boats, paddles, and PFDs, or may rent appropriate gear for the duration of the course from the instructor. Please contact the Instructor for additional fees if rental equipment is needed.



Beth Wiegandt: Beth is a Canoe and Kayak Instructor-Trainer with the ACA, Chair of the ACA River Committee, and ACA Instructor for SUP and River Safety and Rescue.  She has been instructing paddlers and leading trips in the area since 1989.  Contact Beth youroutdoorclassroom@gmail.com or 540-556-2594 with any questions regarding this course or other paddling opportunities.

Deadlines: Registration, a $125 deposit (which includes registration/materials fee of $25) AND your Health Form must be received no later than April 24, 2015.  Your deposit counts toward your total fee, and all balances are due no later than May 6, 2015.  All Checks are payable to Camp Bethel.  Credit Card payments (with 4% surcharge added) are accepted by mail or by phone at 540-992-2940.  Or, for no additional surcharge, Register On-Line.
