ACA Canoe Instructor Certification Course Offering

IDW/ICE

Dates: May 10-14, 2014 (Sat-Wed)

 

Certification for Tandem or Solo Canoe Instructors/Current Instructor Updates

Level 1 (2 Days, May 10-11): Intro to Canoe

Level 2 (1 day May 12 + Level 1 Cert): Essentials of River Canoe

Level 3 (1 day May 13 + Level 2 Cert): River Canoeing

Level 4 (1 day May 14 + Level 3 Cert): White Water Canoeing

 

This course is appropriate for:

* Camps and Conferences offering canoe programs on Lakes or Rivers

* County and City Parks and Recreation Canoe Program Staff/Trip Leaders

* Physical Education Programs wishing to teach paddling as a life-time sport

* Current Certified Instructors needing updates

* Anyone wishing to teach canoeing and gain in their own skills as well, and

* Girl and Boy Scout Leaders wishing to teach skills and lead trips for Scouting Programs.

 

Stay for all 5 days OR just for the level certification you wish to achieve.  All Course work will be in the Roanoke Valley Area.  Tent Camping, Bunk style accommodations, or local hotels can be arranged for participants if desired (lodging fees are NOT included in Course Price).

 

Classes begin daily at 9:00 am and finish around 5:00 pm.  Instructor Candidates are expected to bring a “working” lunch to each session, and plenty of fluids for the day.

Level 1 (Days 1 & 2): Intro to Canoeing

Level 2 (Day 3): Essentials of River Canoeing

Level 3 (Day 4): River Canoeing

Level 4 (Day 5): White Water Canoeing

 

Course Price:  $100/person/day + $25 reg/materials fee

Location:  Roanoke Area, based from Camp Bethel (328 Bethel Road, Fincastle, VA 24090)

Prerequisite: Must be a current or new member of the American Canoe Association and pay $25 fee to the Safety Instruction and Education Council (SEIC) at time of certification.  Note: SEIC fee is included in the course fee for all candidates staying three or more days.

 

Equipment:  Instructor Candidates may bring their own boats, paddles, and PFDs, or may rent appropriate gear for the duration of the course from the instructor. Please contact the Instructor for additional fees if rental equipment is needed.

 

Instructor:

Beth Wiegandt: Beth is a Canoe Instructor-Trainer with the ACA, Chair of the ACA River Committee, and ACA Instructor for Kayaking, SUP and River Safety and Rescue.  She has been instructing paddlerss and leading trips in the area for the past 26 years.  Contact Beth youroutdoorclassroom@gmail.com or (540) 556-2594 with any questions regarding this course or other paddling opportunities.

 

Registration: A minimum of 5 Instructor Candidates and maximum of 12 ensure that you receive the individual instruction that you need to be successful in this course.  Registration, deposit and confidential Health Form must be completed and returned no later than April 25, 2014 to:

Deadlines: Registration, a $125 deposit (which includes registration/materials fee of $25) AND your Health Form must be received no later than April 25, 2014.  All balances are due no later than May 7, 2014.  All Checks are payable to Camp Bethel.  Credit Card payments (with 4% surcharge added) are accepted by mail or by phone at (540) 992-2940.
