ACA Canoe or Kayak Trip Leader Course

Dates: May 23-25, 2014 (Fri-Sun)

Friday 6:00pm through Sunday 5:00pm

The Trip Leader Course is designed to provide training for those taking day trips on rivers.  This course is appropriate for scout leaders, fishermen, or anyone who spends time on the river.  This course is NOT a beginning paddling course.  Each participant must have spent time in boats and have good boat control.  The course focuses on:

  • Boat Handling (strokes and maneuvers) canoe or kayak options

  • Prevention and Planning

  • Safety and Rescue (using canoes or kayaks, land based, or in water)

This is an excellent course to prepare people who spend time on the water to think and act preventatively, while giving them the tools to handle situations that may arise on the water.  Although this is not a certification course, participants who are successful in the course receive a card and certificate from the ACA for trip leading and an assessment of skills (canoe or kayak).

COST:  $165/person.  We must have at minimum 5 persons in order to run the course.  Cost includes all instruction, materials, introductory membership in the ACA, tent camping at Camp Bethel (bring your own tent), and breakfast Saturday, breakfast Sunday, and optional dinner Sunday.  Those not camping/dining at Camp Bethel are responsible for their own hotel/area lodging.  Rental gear is available for an additional fee ($25 for canoe gear; $40 for kayak gear).

This course is appropriate for:

* Camps and Conferences offering day trips on rivers

* County and City Parks and Recreation Canoe/Kayak Program Staff/Trip Leaders

* Physical Education Programs wishing to teach paddling as a life-time sport

* Anyone wishing to gain in their own skills as well, and

* Girl and Boy Scout Leaders wishing to lead trips for Scouting Programs.
