ACA Kayak Instructor Certification Course Offering

IDW/ICE

Dates: October 11-13, 2014 (Sat-Mon)

Certification for Kayak Instructors/Current Instructor Updates

Level 1 (2 Days, October 11-12): Intro to Kayaking

Level 2 (1 day October 13 + Level 1 Cert): Essentials of River Kayak

 

This course is appropriate for:

* Camps and Conferences offering kayak programs on Lakes or Rivers

* County and City Parks and Recreation Kayak Program Staff/Trip Leaders

* Physical Education Programs wishing to teach paddling as a life-time sport

* Current Certified Instructors needing updates

* Anyone wishing to teach kayaking and gain in their own skills as well, and

* Girl and Boy Scout Leaders wishing to teach skills and lead trips for Scouting Programs.

 

Stay for all 3 days OR just for the level certification you wish to achieve.  All Course work will be in the Roanoke Valley Area.  Tent Camping ($5/night), Bunk style cabin accommodations ($10/night), or local hotels can be arranged for participants if desired (lodging fees are NOT included in Course Price).  For tent camping or cabin space, check YES on your Registration Form.

 

Classes begin daily at 9:00 am and finish around 5:00 pm.  Instructor Candidates are expected to bring a “working” lunch to each session, and plenty of fluids for the day.

Course Price:  $100/person/day + $25 reg/materials fee

Location:  Roanoke Area, based from Camp Bethel (328 Bethel Road, Fincastle, VA 24090)

Prerequisite: Must be a current or new member of the American Canoe Association and pay $25 fee to the Safety Instruction and Education Council (SEIC) at time of certification.  Note: SEIC fee is included in the course fee for all candidates staying all three days.

 

Equipment:  Instructor Candidates may bring their own boats, paddles, helmets, skirts and PFDs, or may rent appropriate gear for the duration of the course from the instructor for $30. Please contact the Instructor for additional fees if rental equipment is needed.

 

 

Instructor: Beth Wiegandt: Beth is a Level 3 Kayak Instructor, a Level 4 Canoe Instructor-Trainer with the ACA, Chair of the ACA River Committee, member of the ACA Intro to Paddling Committee, and ACA Instructor for SUP and River Safety and Rescue.  She has been instructing paddlerss and leading trips in the area for the past 26 years.  Contact Beth youroutdoorclassroom@gmail.com or (540) 556-2594 with any questions regarding this course or other paddling opportunities.  Beth is from Daleville, VA.

 

 

 

Registration: A minimum of 5 Instructor Candidates and maximum of 10 ensure that you receive the individual instruction that you need to be successful in this course.  Registration Form, deposit and confidential Health Form must be completed and returned no later than September 16, 2014 to:

Deadlines: Registration Form, a $125 deposit (which includes registration/materials fee of $25) AND your Health Form must be received no later than September 16, 2014.  Your deposit counts toward your total fee, and all balances are due no later than October 7, 2014.  All Checks are payable to Camp Bethel.  Credit Card payments (with 4% surcharge added) are accepted by mail or by phone at (540) 992-2940.
