Specific Adventure Information
Biking: Spend one day biking down the awesome Virginia Creeper Trail (a historic “rail-to-trail”) with top-grade rented bikes & helmets. This trail winds down through a spectacular mountain gorge with 32 bridge/creek crossings. Along the way, we’ll visit USFS Green Cove Station, an icy cold swimming hole, and eat the best pizza in Virginia.
Canoeing: Your week includes 1/2 day of paddling on the beautiful James River, just 8 miles from Camp Bethel. Canoe skills, swimming, lunch on the beach and more with your adventure counselors on a 10-mile river section, perfect for beginners and seasoned paddlers. Rated easy-moderate.
Caving: The wonder of exploring the underground world thousands of years old; nothing quite like it. We’ll explore the speleothems (look it up), corridors and cavern rooms in one of Virginia’s natural caves with the experts from Wild Guyde Adventures; a great way to get down and dirty while learning how to protect these unique treasures. Learn what happens when water meets limestone, (like springs and caves beneath Camp Bethel). Bring headlamp, pants, shoes & long-sleeved shirt to get very muddy. Helmet & leadership provided. Rated easy-moderate.
River Tubing: It’s our best way to beat the summer heat! Your week includes a fun and relaxing morning of river tubing on the beautiful and historic James River, just 6 miles from Camp Bethel. Let the river do the work as we ride the gentle current through gorgeous scenery over riffles and mini-rapids while keeping cool splashing, swimming and playing. Get creative with your float style or team up with your counselors and new friends to build an ultimate tube-blob-flotilla! Tubes, PFDs and transport provided by our friends at Twin River Outfitters, with counselor leadership provided by Camp Bethel. Rated easy.
Rock Climbing: Enjoy an awesome day of excellent outdoor anchored belay climbing along and above the Maury River, led and instructed by the experts from Wild Guyde Adventures. Learn all the moves and gear as we safely jam up the crux of the headwall and rappel back to deck; suitable for beginners and experienced Edgers. Back at camp, we’ll learn high ropes course facilitation: very cool! All gear, helmets, harnesses and leadership provided. Rated moderate with challenging options.
Whitewater Rafting: Your combo-adventure week includes a day of wet, wild & wonderful fun, courtesy of our professional raft guides and the glorious Lower New River Gorge. Learn crucial teamwork and coordination as we paddle “all-forward” through Class IV and V rapids: the “Keeny’s,” the “Railroads” and the “Million Dollar Wave.” It’s an incredibly fun experience; suitable for beginners and soggy-paddlers alike. Specialty Camps Information
Climbing Combo: All the perks of regular camp, plus your week also includes one full day on our onsite Climbing Course and two days of adventure outings: Rock Climbing and a field trip to River Rock Climbing Gym in Roanoke VA!
Intro to Backpacking (Week 3)
This week is a hybrid of staying in the Adventure Village, soaking up some on-site activities, and learning/preparing for a 2-night backpacking trek on the AT. Campers will learn what and how to pack, essential skills such as "leave no trace", and gain some comfortability with day hikes before embarking on their overnight off-site trek. Campers will actually hike the AT back to camp!
Backpacking: (Week 7)
Ounce for ounce and day by day this journey is the best adventure we offer: a 6-day, 5-night backpacking trek. Backpacking is a dynamic group experience unequaled by any other program, and each day, mile and footstep reveals powerful life lessons along our journey. We’ll parallel our hike to the disciples’ discoveries during their journey with Jesus (read Luke 24:13-35). Each trip is suitable for beginners and great for returning campers who aspire for leadership. Our trip will range 30-50 miles through lush forest valleys and over spectacular mountain-top views. Join your experienced WFA-trained counselors for this extraordinary journey of discovery as we hike, camp, cook, share and grow together along the white blazes; and learn cool lifelong outdoor skills. Hammock and rain-fly required! A detailed gear guide will follow your sign up. If you need one, camp can provide a pack. Both trips are co-ed, and each trip hikes a different trail section. Rated moderate with several daily challenging moments; occasional difficult moments.
Mountains to Beach to Bay Adventure Trip
There is no other trip that sees as much of the “wealth” that the Commonwealth of Virginia offers! After check-in Sunday at camp playing, packing and preparing, we’ll travel Monday morning to hike a mountain peak for unique "mountain-top" group games and devotions and putting our toes into the mountain stream. Then it's eastward to put our toes (and, let's be honest, usually our entire bodies) in the Atlantic Ocean for sunset swimming. After an overnight stay at our hotel or hostel, Tuesday morning is beach day at a natural section of Sandbridge Beach (south of Virginia Beach) for a fun-filled day of sand and swimming. Tuesday evening includes a visit to the fun and bustling shops and shows along the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, July 4th fireworks show, then overnight at our hotel/hostel. Wednesday after "Morning Watch" sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean, we’ll travel across/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to VA’s Eastern Shore and our partner site, Camp Occohannock on the Bay for canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, and fishing, watching a brilliant sunset in the Bay, all while enjoying Camp OOTB's hospitality, program, good food and unique tidal marsh at Occohannock Creek. Thursday, we’ll visit Assateague Nat’l Seashore for another fun beach day plus exploring to see wild ponies of Assateague and the famous ice cream and shops of Chincoteague. This fun, intense adventure trip is suitable for beginners or experienced campers, and it’s the trip all the adventure staff want to lead. A trip-specific pack list will follow your sign up. Rated easy-moderate. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim.
Moonrise Adventure: Adventure Camp for Nocturnal Teens! Your 6 days and 5 nights include all the classic fun and activities of regular Resident Camp but with the added FUN of NIGHT ACTIVITIES and living in the Wilson Creek Adventure Village! Bed time is 2:00am, with wake up at 11:00am, breakfast at the Ark at 12:30, lunch at 5:30, worship at 9:00, and group dinner at your Adventure Village at 10:30pm. Night activities include glow-in-the-dark high ropes & zip line, illuminated swimming pool, astronomy, glow games, night hikes, campfires, and in-depth faith explorations, until bedtime at 2:00am.

Or, choose one or two watercrafts and stick with them for the week. Your week includes 3 day trips on the James River with Beth Wiegandt, certified instructor, and Camp Bethel staff. You will learn river reading skills and how to control your craft as we navigate class I-II rapids. No experience necessary, but all participants must be able to swim. Campers with prior paddling experience will learn advanced skills. Boats/boards, helmets, PFDs, skirts and boat gear is provided. Rated moderate.
