Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 6.5-hour course that teaches participants to recognize and respond to warning signs of mental health issues and crises in adolescents (12-18) and teaches a 5-step action plan for crisis and non-crisis situations. It is an interactive training with hands-on activities, role plays, and simulations.
WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN?
The course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, ADHD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorder. Participants do not learn to diagnose, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling; rather, participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core 5-step action plan.
5 Step Action Plan:
Assess for risk of suicide / harm
Listen non-judgmentally
Give reassurance & information
Encourage appropriate professional help
Encourage self-help support strategies
To attend, RSVP to Jenna by May 17 at 540-992-2940 or [email protected]. Indicate whether you wish to purchase our $12 lunch.
