2020 Skateboarding Camp, July 12-17 (for rising 7th-12th graders)
Sunday 4:00pm through Friday 6:30pm.
Skateboarders know about "Instant Community." Take a group of enthusiastic skaters, add a skate park and ZAP, you've got Instant Community! This week of camp has us doing all the usual summer camp activities (listed below), PLUS four day trips (Monday-Thursday) to the four best area skateparks for lots of fun and challenges, ALL WHILE capturing and creating our own skate videos for a "community exhibition" for families on Friday after dinner. On at least one of our skatepark outings, we will visit and skate with members of the Roanoke Skate Team to share ideas, tricks, and tips. Campers will reside in (gender separated) cabins on main campus so that we can skate to and from all our in-camp locations, (yep, the roads in main camp are paved!).
Prior skateboarding experience is recommended, and the only pre-requisite skills are the ability to "Drop-In" and "Ollie." We require skaters to wear helmets while skating. Advanced skaters will develop even further AND help beginners learn new tricks and skills. You must bring your own board and helmet, and knee & elbow pads are recommended (parents can sign a special form to waive the requirement for knee & elbow pads). Bring your video camera/phone and your laptop for daily video work, (or borrow Camp Bethel's clunkers); details will follow in your Confirmation Packet. Parents: Donate your disconnected smart phones for us to use as camp cameras and video cameras! 540-992-2940 or <[email protected]>
In addition to four daily skate outings, activities for the week include group games, nature, crafts, music and singing, campfires, swimming, low-ropes group challenges, creek-fun, hiking the camp trails, archery, orienteering and geocaching, slack-lining, GaGa Ball & 9-Square, Morning Watch, Bible study, daily “Voice Your Choice” Unit activity, polar bear swims, night activities, special all-camp programs and an evening on the climbing wall and high ropes course! On Tuesday or Wednesday your unit will cookout in your Home-in-the-Woods and have the option of one or more overnight camp-outs (see opt-out info on brochure page 5). Be here for an awesome week!
Warning! Skateboarding activities inherently carry a risk of injury from falling. Our instructors and counselors work to decrease risk of injury, (by, for example, not allowing flips or jumps where feet are above the shoulders and requiring helmets). For these reasons, all Skateboarding Camp participants MUST be covered by family or individual medical insurance.
Check in Sunday at 4:00 and check out Friday at 6:30.
Subsidized Fee (discounted cost) = $___; Supporters Fee (actual cost) = $___; Sustainers Fee (cost + $50 gift) = $___.

In collaboration with the Roanoke Skatepark Initiative!
Roanoke needs a place to skate! And we are proud to support and partner with the Roanoke Skatepark Initiative (a non-profit 501(3)c organization) for our Skateboarding Camp, AND “to raise awareness on the importance of skateboarding as a form of recreational and cultural expression… [and to advocate for the eventual] construction of a new skatepark in Roanoke.” RoaSkate will provide semi-professional skateboarding instruction during our daily skatepark outings. Why 3 Prices for Summer Camp? The Choice is Yours!
Each family is different, so Camp Bethel offers a voluntary fee program. You know your family's finances better than we do, so choose the fee most suitable for your family. All campers receive the EXACT SAME QUALITY Camp Bethel experience, no matter what amount you choose to pay or contribute.
The Supporter's Fee is what it actually costs Camp Bethel to provide this summer camp experience for one camper, including counselor and lifeguard pay, utilities, insurance, meals, building and grounds maintenance, vehicle upkeep, replacing outdated equipment, accreditation and permits, program supplies and curriculum. Choosing the Sustainer's Fee (actual cost + $50 gift) gives you the opportunity to help us do more with the mission funding we receive. You help us stretch our limited campership funds to help more children experience the power of camp. You help Camp Bethel make needed improvements and foster future growth in all we do. Through mission funding dollars, we are able to offer a Subsidized Fee. This reduced (subsidized) rate is made possible by our District congregations, multiple annual fund-raising events, and gifts from individuals who value the impact the summer camp experience at Camp Bethel has on children, youth, and families.
Late arrival and early departure is discouraged, but allowed if needed. However, because staff, food, and supplies are already secured, we cannot provide pro-rated refunds for partial camp attendance once your camper has arrived unless Camp Bethel cancels the program.
Safety and health is our highest priority, and our policies and practices ensure safe and high-quality experiences. We are aligning plans and best practices with our many professional camp associations, and we expect upcoming guidance for summer camps from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Virginia Department of Health. We'll post updates at www.CampBethelVirginia.org/COVID19.
